Happy last day of 2024!
Allow me to add to the year-end emails you receive today by letting you know I read all your feedback to the Second Drafts survey and am making some changes, beginning with this upcoming Friday’s newsletter. Thirty-three of you didn’t hold back in your comments, and hoo, boy, were they honest…and helpful!
In the spirit of TL; DR (“too long; didn’t read,” the malady several suggested the newsletter suffered), the gist of the feedback was this: we love what you write (especially on news and culture), but we want to read less of it more frequently.
Message received. Here’s my list of changes for Second Drafts in 2025:
Update the aesthetics and rework the navigation of the landing page
Limit personal/family/ministry updates to once a quarter
Publish shorter posts twice a month instead of longer posts once a month
Write more current events commentary, fewer long-form esoteric essays
Send out podcast interviews and book, movie, music reviews separately
And, to better facilitate interaction among the Second Drafts readership, I’m opening up comments on posts as well as enabling Substack’s chat feature for subscribers. Not sure how much desire there is/will be to connect in this fashion, but the only way to make a determination is to give it a go. Let’s see what happens.
To each of you who took time to respond with your notes, thank you! And to all of you who are still sticking around, thanks as always for reading Second Drafts.
Gratefully,
Craig
PS: If you’re excited about these changes, would you share this email with one friend along with the suggestion that he or she subscribe? And feel free to leave a comment (public this time) with what you think about the proposed changes.
PPS: Look for the new and improved Second Drafts to begin its fifth year Friday!
